What do bats eat?

Different bats eat different things. Many bats eat fruit and seeds. Others eat insects, fish, frogs & small animals.

Bats are hungry mammals.
Some can eat 1,200 insects in a just one hour!

Are bats blind?

No. This is the great myth about bats. Bats have good eyesight for daytime.

Bats actually have very poor night vision. They rely on something called
echolation for hunting.

Bats have the best hearing of all land mammals.  They often have huge ears .

Are all bats nocturnal?

How many different types?

There are nearly 1,000 different species of bats.

The biggest bats?

Flying fruit bat - the biggest bat in the world
The flying golden crested fruit bat is the largest bat we know of. It has a wing-span of more than 1.5 metres.

It can fly over 30 kilometres.

The smallest?

Kittis hognose - smallest bat
The Kittis Hog-nosed Bat. It is about 1 inch long.
